Singing group in Bromley, BR6
Barbershop is 4-part, unaccompanied (accapella), harmony singing.
We are best known by our name 'The Kentones'. Founded in 1975, the club's objectives are to "educate its members and the public in the performance of unaccompanied harmony singing and to contribute, by public performance or donation, to charitable organisations". What it doesn't say is 'to have fun!' - but we do, lots of it! And in so doing we have travelled from Brighton to Glasgow and places in between such as Harrogate, Llandudno and Scarborough to name a few. We have also sang in Holland and are visited there again in the Autumn of 2009 where we had a truly remarkable time. It was singing, singing all the way. When we returned we were exhausted, but very happy.
Of course we mainly sing more locally in theatres, community centres, churches, schools etc. Along the way we have helped to raise money for many worthwhile causes. During the Christmas 2009 season we sang in the Bromley Glades shopping centre where we raised £978 for the Macmillan Nurses, in just 2 hours! This, together with singing at a Masonic dinner and in the pub (!), brought the total sum raised for the nurses to a magnificent £1150.
The chorus is a member of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) and have reached the finals of the annual National Convention every year since 1995. Currently there are about 60 clubs in BABS and we are rated as one of the top clubs in the organisation. But it is a truly international hobby with clubs throughout Europe, America and Australasia.
How can you become a member?
We always aim for a professional performance, but don't be put off by that and say "I couldn't do that", for almost certainly you can. We draw members from all backgrounds and ages, drawn together by a common interest - a love of 4-part harmony singing. As a hobby it is both fulfilling and rewarding and provides a great opportunity to make new friends. You don't even have to read music. Barbershop is 'ear' music - if you can sing in tune you can become a Barbershop singer. And to help you learn your part you are given teach tapes or CDs, Once you have had a voice assessment to decide which part is best suited to your voice. It's as simple as that! Currently members pay a quarterly subscription of £35 and the costs of stage uniforms (of which we have about four) are covered out of club funds. A warm welcome awaits you. Please also note that we do, from time to time, run Learn to Sing courses which are completely free.
Some benefits of membership of the Kentones:
*Regular social events and sometimes travel to sing with like-minded people from across the country. *The opportunity for education in vocal techniques. *A bi-monthly magazine published by BABS called 'Harmony Express'. *A bi-monthy copy of our own club full-colour magazine, 'The Kentonian". *Friendship and camaraderie which singing in a chorus brings.
The Kentones are available for booking for a variety of venues and occasions, shows, special birthday celebrations, social clubs, charity events, garden parties.......you name it. For a show that's refreshingly different, that reaches the parts other types of music doesn't reach and that's guaranteed to make your life a little bit brighter, call us now.
