About Porthmadog And District Amateur Radio Society

The Porthmadog And District Amateur Radio Society meets every third thursday of the month, any one is welcome to come and join us. There are a number of different things that happen in the meetings from a surplus sale through to a delicious christmas meal. P.A.D.A.R.S. Have an agreement with the Meirionydd Amateur Radio Society which means that when you join one of the clubs you are a member of the other club. Every tuesday night at 8pm on the GB3DW repeter (145.662.5 with tone burst access) there is a sched run by a number of different members of the club again anyone is invited to join in. January Meeting - Saturday 23rd of January 2010Read More …

  The topic of discussion at the Porthmadog &; District Amateur Radio Society's meeting last Thursday evening, was the organising of a special event radio station on the week end of the 30th./31st. January in aid of the 'R.N.L.I. SOS WEEK'
 
        The station is to be set up in the Madoc Yacht Club and will be on the air from 9-00 A.M. Saturday through to 4-00 P.M. Sunday, visitors being welcome to come along to see the station in operation on these two days.
 
        During the course of the evening, Vanessa Lea was taking orders for the society's Tee shirt which will the logo that Vanessa has designed for the society.
 
        For the February meeting on Thursday 18th. @ 7-45 P.M., there will be a talk 'National Service Operator' to be given by Alan Skellern, to which, as is usual, visitors are most welcome.

As is the custom for the December meeting, members of the Porthmadog &; District Amateur Radio Society, last Thursday evening, enjoyed Christmas Dinner in the Madoc Yacht Club's restaurant after which the evening continued in the club's lounge bar. During the course of the evening Bob Hughes-Burton distributed the first edition of the society news letter, which announced that three of our members (Twm Ford, Neil Jones and Michael Hilliar-Mills) had passed the Radio Amateurs Foundation exam, and have now received their call signs. Normal society meetings for 2010 commence on Thursday 21st. January in the above venue at 7.45 P.M. where the evening will be spent in discussion on radio and electronic subjects, to which visitors are most welcome. This tuesday we are pleased to say that the three candidates that sat their exam passed their test. Congratulations to Neil, Twm and Mike we hope they enjoy out hobbie and become active stations, of course our congratulations do not stop there also our congratulations go out to Peter and Bob  on their sucess in their first teaching venture together. Congratulations again and thanks go out to Peter and Bob for the hard work that they put in to teaching the candidates. Many thanks to the owner of the venue who let the venue be used for teaching and the examinantion. We look forward to hearing the candidates on the air and to any future success in any more teaching ventures.

The Annual General Meeting of the Porthmadog &; District Amateur Radio Society, took place last Thursday evening (19th. November 2009) in the Madoc Yacht Club, where the Chairman, Simon Lord, in his report outlined the society's activities over the past year, with the Secretary, Glyn Cadwaldr, giving a report on communication with the RSGB and Offcom, followed by the Treasurer, Alan skellern, presenting the balance sheet and report on the society's financial position over the past year, finally, Bob Hughes-Burton, informed the meeting of plans for future events.
 
        After the presentation of reports, the committee stood down, after which there followed the election of a committee for the forth coming year, which saw, Simon Lord, re-elected Chairman; David Jones, Vice Chairman; Glyn Cadwaldr, Secretary; Alan Skellern, Treasurer; Peter Brookes, Webmaster and Bob Hughes-Burton, as Events Secretary, with Amanda Bennett, being elected as Contacts Secretary, the first young lady to be elected to committee since the 1980s.
 
        As is now the custom, the December meeting will see members sitting down to Christmas Dinner in the Yacht Club's Restaurant, normal society meetings recommencing in 2010 with the January meeting on Thursday the 20th.

Just an update from the last meeting, the society is now well on the way to getting a new club callsign! We should have it within the next few weeks, hopefully in time for the Fireworks night we are all looking forward to on the 8th of November. If we are lucky we should get one of our 3 top choices which are MC0PAD, MC0PAR or MC0PRS, so listen out for us!

There was much activity in the Madoc Yacht Club last Thursday evening, where the Porthmadog &; District Amateur Radio Society set up a radio station in connection with their 'Evening on the Air', as a practical demonstration of Amateur Radio to new comers to the hobby. Amateur Radio being one of the two hobbies that require training and exams, the other becoming a Private Pilot.
 
        During the course of the evening, Vanessa Lea, took orders for the society Tee Shirt which will be sporting the society logo that she has designed, Bob Hughes-Burton agreed to publish a quarterly news letter on behalf of the society, which can be posted to members who, for various reasons are unable to attend society meetings, this being a means of keeping them informed of what is happening in the society.
 
        Next month the Annual General Meeting is upon us, this will be held in the above venue at 7-45 P.M. Thursday 19th. November, where Society Officers will be presenting their reports for the past year, after which there will be appointment or reappointment of officers for the forthcoming year.

The Porthmadog &; District Amateur Radio Society last Thursday evening,held its September meeting in the Madoc Yacht Club, with a large number of members plus visitors in attendance, the main event of the evening was a talk by member, Dafydd Ellis, on 'Morse Code for beginners' in which Dafydd recounted his experiences of operation by this mode of communication, as well suggesting ways of learning Morse code, he also had on display a collection of Morse Keys that he has used and for that matter still does.
 
        Also discussed at the meeting was a society 'T' shirt and organising more out side activities, it was reported by Bob Hughes-Burton and Peter Brookes, that foundation licence courses were being held every Tuesday evening in Criccieth, John Martin also reminded members, of the special event station being operated from Pen y Mount Junction on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, on Saturday 26th. September, in connection with 'Railways on the Air' week end.
 
        Next months meeting, on Thursday 15th. October in the above venue at 7-45 P.M. will feature a evening on the air with two or three radio stations being set up, as usual visitors are most welcome to come along and find out more about amateur radio.

At the Porthmadog &; District Amateur Radio Society's August meeting in the Madoc Yacht Club, there was considerable discussion on organising events for members to participate in, which generated usful suggestions from members present.
 
        After the discussion period, the evening continued with the annual quiz, with members forming tems of two. with the questions being set by Peter Brookes, the Quizmaster for the evening. The result was a draw and despite two tie break questions, the winning team was decided by a toss of coin, which came out in favour of David Jones and Glyn Cadwaldr.
 
        Next months meeting at 7-45 P.M. in the above venue, Thursday 17th. September, will be a demonstration on 'Morse for Beginners' to which visitors are most welcome.
