About Long Man Morris Men

We were formed in 1978, learning the dances from the traditional villages in the counties of Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire. Long Man Morris Men take their dances from the village traditions of Adderbury, Bampton, Bledington, Brackley, Bucknell and Upton on Severn. Long Man Morris Men have also devised an extensive collection of their own dances, the Wilmington tradition, a village in East Sussex. These dances commemorate local people, places and events of significance. Every year, we dance locally in the picturesque surrounding of the South Downs and at local fetes, festivals and pubs. The Morris Dancing year traditionally starts at sunrise on the 1st May when Long Man Morris Men can be found dancing at the foot of an ancient giant, a carved chalk figure on the South Downs called the Long Man of Wilmington. It is from this figure the side takes its name. Long Man Morris Men have performed throughout the United Kingdom and has also made several visits to Germany, France, Belgium and Czech Republic to showcase traditional English folkdance. We are always looking for new recruits, musicians & dancers to swell our club numbers. We meet regularly, during the winter months to practice (yes, we practice) and dance out around the local area from May 1st through to September. Give it a try, you know you want to.
