CLEATOR Moor boxer Cameron Bagley has been touching gloves with some of the country’s finest fighters

Bagley was one five boxers from around the country to attend a training day at the English Institute of Sport with the Great Britain boxing squad.

Having been selected by a committee from Cash4Clubs to benefit from this experience, he was introduced to the boxers which included Olympians Savannah Marshall and Andrew Selby, and Olympic captain Thomas Stalker. Members of the coaching team included Olympic bronze medal winner and former world middleweight champion, Richie Woodhall.

A question and answer session was conducted where the boxers asked questions on nutrition, sprints or distance running and included how to deal with pre-bout nerves.

Bagley said: “The facilities were immense; everything there is dedicated to dealing with the athletes.

“In the boxing area, everything can be recorded for play back so the coaches can analyse it, bringing out the good and bad points of what they have seen.

“They also have probably the biggest collection of video footage of amateur boxers from the rest of the world. These can be used to view and produce a fight plan against future opponents.”

The highlight of the day was a training session where, after the warm-up, the boxers were put through their paces with bag/pad work, shadow boxing and conditional drills, after which Bagley earned praise from Woodhall on his footwork, stance and balance.

Bagley added: “It was a brilliant day to see where the GB squad train. The facilities and support was inspiring. I enjoyed all aspects of the day but in particular the workout with the GB coaches and the pad session with Richie Woodhall.”

Cleator Moor ABC extended thanks to Cash4Clubs for making the day possible and for its financial support.

CLEATOR Moor boxers were in action at Park Hotel in Tynemouth recently.

Cameron Bagley 1 of 2 Photos Cameron Bagley boxed J Henderson, of Howdon, in a hard-fought contest.

In the first round, Bagley used the ring well and showed speed against an aggressive Henderson, who was going forward looking for the big shots.

Bagley showed better ring-craft, scoring with one-two combinations and landed some heavy punches and won the round.

In two, Bagley found his range and broke down Henderson’s guard, drew blood from Henderson’s nose, looked the stronger.

Henderson fought back and made the round competitive, but Bagley won the round.

In the final round, Henderson came out strong, threw lots of punches, but Bagley kept to his boxing, jabbing and moving, with the referee looking at Henderson’s nose three times.

Henderson was still going forward hoping to land the big shots, but Bagley won the contest unanimously.

Clubmate Adam Rogers boxed S Shar, of Horden, who had stopped his last four opponents.

In the first round, Rogers kept tight guard, used the ring well, landed with his jab and combinations against an aggressive Shar, who was throwing big hooks trying to intimidate Rogers.

Rogers landed the cleaner shots, matched his opponent in the exchanges and won the round.

In the second, Rogers used the same tactics, with Shar trying to close the ring down and make Rogers box from close range.

Rogers maintained his distance and kept to his boxing and won the round.

In the final round, Shar came out strong, kept the pressure on Rogers and had more success, but it was too little too late and Rogers won the contest by a majority decision.
