Shirley Pipe Band
About Shirley Pipe Band
The Shirley Pipe Band is based in Solihull in central England. The Band was formed in 1962 when it evolved from an established Scout Drum and Bugle Band to specialise in the Great Highland Bagpipe. We have maintained our links with the Scout movement, and to this day are a section of First Shirley Scout Group. We are members of the Midlands branch of the RSPBA, membership number 514. For further information about the Band contact info@shirleypipeband.com
Membership
The band flourishes through the long term commitment of its members. Some have remained in the band since its creation and are joined by their sons and daughters. Further members have been recruited locally, or have joined from the scout group.
We have a busy training schedule, there normally being up to ten people learning bagpipes or drums at any time. If you live in the area, and have ambitions to be a piper or drummer, then call the Pipe Major or Secretary, or contact vacancies@shirleypipeband.com.
Stop Press - new pipers and drummers welcome
Performances
We perform at anything from the smallest private events to the largest public functions. From weddings to carnivals. From "surprise" parties to televised international sporting events. We are regularly invited back for repeat bookings, having fulfilled some engagements every year for more than ten years. On many occasions we have undertaken overseas bookings, spending long weekends in Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany.
If you wish to enquire about booking us for your own event, please email bookings@shirleypipeband.com . We charge fees to cover the costs of running the band, and of travelling to each event. Please also bear in mind that our members are volunteers with commitments to their families, homes, and employers. We strive to achieve a balance of bookings in our local area, across the UK, and overseas. It is impossible for us to undertake every booking enquiry that we receive, so be sure to contact us with plenty of notice.
Music
Our repertoire includes around 60 tunes, with a wide selection of marches complemented by airs, strathspeys and reels. These are mainly traditional tunes from Scotland and the rest of Great Britain, supplemented by some of our own compositions.
Uniform
The central part of our uniform is the Hunting Stewart tartan, worn by permission of Her Majesty the Queen. Being of Hunting pattern, the predominant colour is green, with bands of red, yellow, and dark blue.
We have in fact two uniforms, to suit the needs of the occasion and the likely weather / temperature conditions. The Hunting Stewart kilt is worn with both uniforms, with either a scarlet tunic, or a lighter- weight claret Argyll jacket.
Our main activity is Music Groups.
