"Kindertransport" by Diane Samuels - Friday 24th of September 2010Read More …

"At its heart, the play is about that universal and timeless aspect of human exerience: the separation of a child from its parent. Every person on earth, whatever their age, can relate to that."

DIANE SAMUELS

The German word 'Kindertransport' means literally ‘the transport of children’. Also called the Refugee Children's Movement, it was a way for desperate Jewish parents to send their children abroad to escape growing Nazi persecution at home. In Britain a coalition of Jewish, Quaker, and other groups persuaded Parliament to admit a limited number of children provided each posted a £50 bond ‘to assure their ultimate resettlement’. Between December 1938 and September 1939 over 10,000 refugee children came to Britain: of these, 7,482 were Jewish.

Kindertransport tells the story of 8-year-old Eva/Evelyn whose parents sent her on the train to England. Years later, a chance discovery reveals the secrets of her past and her heritage to a daughter who had no idea of her mother's history. It also deals with loss: the loss of Eva’s childhood and the letting go of her own daughter 40 years on.

First performed by the Soho Theatre Company in 1993, the play was last revived in 2007 by the Shared Experience Theatre Company.

In a penal colony in 1789, a young lieutenant directs rehearsals of the Restoration comedy, The Recruiting Officer. But with a cast of dispirited convicts, opposition from sadistic officers, and a leading lady who faces being hanged, Australia's first theatrical production is in trouble from the start ...

Now recognised as a modern classic, the play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre and has been performed all over the world. It was awarded the Evening Standard and Olivier Awards for Best New Play in 1989.
