Roman Road Excavations 2013 will take place over Bank Holiday Weekends from Easter to August on the easterly dig site on the above map of Roman Estate Roads. Trenches will continue north on the Zig Zag line to find the end of the crushed flint. Excavations will also continue on the third parallel feature, which shows as two dark lines with a light line between in the field, and a light line in the wood. Excavations in the field have shown great disturbance to a considerable depth. Dykes were often constructed in the Dark Ages to cut or control Roman Roads, and possibly this occurred here, but filled in when this field was formed out of Chawton Park Wood. It may be possible to continue investigating of this in September depending on the harvest.
The date has been fixed for Sat and Sun 4 & 5 August 2012, with the weekend 11 - 12 August available if we do not finish. We are seeing if camping can be allowed in the fields near the site, which is south of Broadwindsor (E of Beaminster) off B3162, ST435 013.
For further details, please contact Richard Whaley 01252 548 115
