  1. News: Festival of Archaeology 2015 - Old Winchester Hill event 1 week ago

CBA Festival - Old Winchester Hill Outer Defences, 18 - 19 July 2015

The Iron Age Hill Fort has extensive outer defences. They extended a mile to west of the traditional ramparts, half a mile to the SE, and 1.5 miles to the NE. It has not been realised that such Iron Age Hill Forts had such extensive defences -- other such forts could do so too. Providing defendable enclosures for their live stock was probably the aim. They form fighting terraces, at least 3 one above the other, with a level way cut on sloping ground, and we expect a palisade at its edge. They are strategically sited, making use of natural escarpments.

Meet 1030 Sat 18 at car park, Old Winchester Hill, SU645 215. Sign from A32 at Warnford. Briefing and visit remains near the car park. Visitors can decide which remains to visit on Sunday - though do not have to attend on both days (but less briefing on Sunday).

Bring picnic lunch both days There is shelter for briefing near car park if rain. Surveys will be linked here when available. Overview. Survey of the Hill Fort. Visitors should print these out so they have their own maps for the tour.

  2. News: Roman Road Excavation - Chilcomb 1 week ago

Excavations on the new Winchester - Chichester Roman Road will occur on Bank Holiday weekends from Easter to May 2015 on the Chilcomb Zig-Zag near Winchester. Concrete foundations have been found. Over Easter a greater area of the concrete was uncovered, and it was concluded that the concrete originally covered the whole roadway. In the May Bank Holidays we will be looking under the concrete for a suspected Roman culvert.

Excavations on the Winchester - London Roman Road will occur over the August Bank Holiday Weekend in 2015, near Alton and Four Marks in Hants. There will be some weekends in September 2015, including in the fields depending on the harvest on features associated with the Roman Road, and dark circles which may be Roman dew ponds or earlier hut circles.

Experienced and novice excavators welcome. A training course is available.

17th Oct - Roman Road Excavations 2013 by Clare Gillett

Roman Road Excavations 2013 will take place over Bank Holiday Weekends from Easter to August on the easterly dig site on the above map of Roman Estate Roads. Trenches will continue north on the Zig Zag line to find the end of the crushed flint. Excavations will also continue on the third parallel feature, which shows as two dark lines with a light line between in the field, and a light line in the wood. Excavations in the field have shown great disturbance to a considerable depth. Dykes were often constructed in the Dark Ages to cut or control Roman Roads, and possibly this occurred here, but filled in when this field was formed out of Chawton Park Wood. It may be possible to continue investigating of this in September depending on the harvest.
