Fun for the family as new attraction launches in the JQ this year

An exciting new tourist attraction that will be popular with all ages is coming to the Jewellery Quarter this year.

Wonderful World of Trains & Planes – an interactive attraction – will open just off St Paul’s Square in the former Derwent Foundry building.

The attraction traces the history of trains and planes throughout the world. It has been designed to thrill audiences with cleverly created scenery changes and the use of new technologies to bring the model world to life.

Managing director Peter Smith said: “Wonderful World has been a dream of mine for many years, so to see it coming together is so exciting. The Jewellery Quarter is the perfect location for this fabulous new tourist attraction that will be fun for all ages, which will evolve and grow and reflect the innovation that Birmingham is championing.”

Come and see a Chinese layout, which includes the world-famous Terracotta Army; view the splendour and elegance of the Orient Express as it travels through Europe; or a large freight train as it makes its way across Canada.

The history of planes will be played out from the first flight by the Wright Brothers up to the super jumbo A380 and the Dreamliner.

Visitors will also be able to take off, fly and land a Boeing 747 in a simulator and listen in to Air Traffic Control.

A miniature Le Mans racetrack will let visitors test their racing skills in both daylight and nighttime conditions.

  • The clubs first project is a scale model of Bournville Engine Shed in n gauge measuring 14ft X 7ft in a continuous loop. Progress in various layouts is being made by other members in a variety of scales/gauges.

Modular Scheme

In addition to the main N gauge club layout, BMRC operates a modular scheme which caters for club members whose primary interest is British outline 00 gauge. The modular layout concept developed in the United States and is operated in the UK by some modellers of American Railroads. The modular scheme uses a set of standards that ensure that all modules interface correctly in respect of track position and electrical connections. The modular systems allows individual modellers to express their own creativity and individual tastes within a loose overall theme. At present the club has approximately ten modules already completed or under construction. When fully assembled, these will provide a layout in excess of 30ft long.

Modules are a standard 2ft wide with length typically 3 to 4ft. and individual members normally transport their own modules to and from club nights..A small number of sections can be kept in the club store for members who cannot easily transport their module.

We used 50mm extruded foam insulation board for the landform, which was then carved to shape. With this as a base the scenery will be a little stronger and more lightweight than a more conventional chickenwire and paper mache/plaster construction. Its a fair bit more work to get the land level right, and definately messier though!

Novice modellers view.

Only joined in January 2011. Since then things have been happening apace. N gauge layout planning is now into actual construction stage especially since move from Rowheath Pavilion to Winterbourne Gradens. Now we have constructional, storage, meeting, running and refreshment facilities. Last two weeks have been very busy - especially so as we have now begun begun to make use (quite adeptly) of our new facilities. Seeing a running display of members' own layout was inspiring - especially to a novice modeller such as myself.

From the Chair

It took a while for the seeds to germinate and now we have a tree with strong roots and branches which is beginning to produce blossom. A great bunch of guys who gel into a community with a common interest in building, running and exhibiting model railways. If you would like to be part of this community contact me on the email address below.
